The kinds of information reported varied from time period to time period throughout the 1800’s. In general, there were no birth notices; marriage and death notices might contain only the names of the persons involved. Death notices rarely list survivors. Longer obituary articles were usually written only for public figures. Remember that the information indexed in this database was taken from the Rochester newspapers exactly as originally printed.
Newspapers from 1898-1903 have been indexed in a card catalog file available in the Local History Division. This portion of the index has not been digitized, and is not available online. To order a copy of the newspaper article, contact:

Rochester was the principal city in central New York and notices of marriages and deaths from all over the western part of the state were reported in the newspapers printed here.
Be careful of mistaken and hidden identities as you check the index cards for your surnames of interest. You can match marriages and deaths with the corresponding entries in church records and compare both with the census records–federal and state to ensure that you have the right ancestors.
